Oruawharo HomesteadOruawharo Homestead was built in 1879 by Sidney Johnston, manager (and later owner) of Oruawharo Station - a 7,176.5ha (17,726 acre) holding in Central Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. The original 21 room house was 60 feet by 70 feet and had a 25 foot stud. The wing with the angled bay windows at the left was added on in 1899.

In total the house comprises of 27 principle rooms (not including bathrooms, hallways etc.) and is approximately 13,500 square feet in size. The grounds are 34 acres in size including around 4 acres of lawns.

Apart from the brick chimneys, the entire building was built out of wood. Large blocks were placed on the corners to simulate stone quoining ( inset) helping to give Oruawharo the appearence of an Edwardian mansion. Trivia: 14 bedrooms, 12 fireplaces, 3 staircases, 2 kitchens, 2 laundries

I was fortunate enough to live at Oruawharo from 1988 - 1992 and again from 1997 - 1998.
